What Worked for Parents

Pre-launch Example Story – Using a Visual Checklist to Improve Bedtime Routine

What was happening

Bedtime had turned into an hour-long battle. My 4-year-old would ask for water, one more story, the hallway light on, anything to avoid actually lying down, and by the time she fell asleep I had no evening left.

What this parent did

I made a very short, visual bedtime checklist with four steps (bath, teeth, one story, lights out) and let her hold a little flashlight to ‘check off’ each picture herself. I also stopped negotiating once the story was done, calmly and the same way every night.

What happened

The first few nights she still tested it and asked for extra stuff, but by about a week in she started walking through the steps mostly on her own. It’s not perfect, some nights are still slow, but the hour-long standoff is gone.

Looking back

I’d start the checklist sooner. I think I made bedtime harder by negotiating each night, which taught her that asking again might work.

This is one parent’s experience, shared to offer perspective rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.
